ACO Sound-On-Site: hyper_text_one

Text by itself is meaningless. It is a web of socially constructed anchor relationally defined by one another. Sound by itself is rationally meaningless. It is simply the other side of the same coin.

Cutting through text with sound, and weaving sound with text, between listening and understanding, may be, there will be a possibility of understanding by not being able to understand…

“hyper_text” is a series of artistic investigation on book, text, reading, literature and sound under the new ACO Sound-On-Site program.

ACO Sound-On-Site | Space Oddity #1: From Below

ACO Sound-On-Site | Space Oddity #1: From Below

Staircase exists on the edge of our memory, somewhere between subconscious and unconscious. Silently, it stays at the back, awaiting the forgotten. With a gesture pointing towards the underworld, it connects different spaces and floors of the building. It is the cradle of dream. Archetypal psychological analysis of space begins here…

Space Oddity is a series of space exploration session under the new ACO Sound-On-Site program. It is an alchemical lab to explore and develop a dialogue with the specific space in an unconventional manner.

About the Performers

Ryan Jordan (UK)
http://ryanjordan.org/home.html
Ryan Jordans work attempts to set out a potential framework for the exploration of often hidden processes and systems functioning in technology, human perceptual mechanisms and environmental phenomena in an attempt to bring them into the forefront of our conscious reality.

Exoterrism (BE/HK)
http://www.thirdtypetapes.com/page/exoterrism
http://soundcloud.com/exoterrism
In his work,Exoterrism (Fan Yau) born in Hong Kong 1987, seeks to overcome the separation between geometrical consciousness and the coming four dimensional perception. Influenced by esoteric systems,Yau often engages computer processed algorithms, as well as errors, feedback and chaotic functions. Constantly seeking for new sounds and synthesizing techniques, he researches the links and differences in human rational, scientific thinking and our existence as a spiritual being in the universe. Through experimentations of sound and it's reaction on the human body, creating short term hallucinations or extra terrestrial experiences. When technology has already surpassed the current notion of space and time, patterns repeating through a multidimensional expanding dynamic system feed-backing through the present moment. When human soul is interpreted as binary decisions and the mind becomes only a consequence of a loop from where you are conditioned. Segmenting the different stratas between the moment you think and the moment you execute.

Naturalismo (IT)
http://www.monstresparexces.com/
It all starts with a microcassette recorder wandering in Rome subway, taping live cut-up bursts of saturated city life. Shifts to harsh noise that struggles to keep a buried layer of melody. Explores minimalism with irony, always loyal to cheapness and imperfection.

Gao Jiafeng (US/CN)
https://gaojiafeng.wordpress.com/
Gao Jiafeng is a performer and sound artist who currently resides in Brooklyn, New York. He draws from early electronic compositions, mountain singing and Shaman spiritual music, interweaves saxophone improvisation, throat singing, along with an array of instruments such Guqin, bamboo clapper, flutes, Suona and electronics in his performances.

Gao grew up in Changsha, a hilly inner Chinese city where the local people are largely exposed to Hunan Opera, Chinese pop and street-style funeral music. Since 2005, Gao has been noted within China’s underground and experimental music scene for his electro-acoustic works. His works have been shown and performed at Central Academy of Fine Art (Beijing), XP (Beijing), Triennale Museum (Milan), 80 WSE Gallery, Gallery MC, etc. Gao’s instrument design “Tri-O,” won the 2014 Guthman Musical Instrument Competition for global musical instrument innovations, presided over by judges including Cycling ’74 CEO David Zicarelli.

Sin:Ned (HK)

Also known as Dennis Wong / Wong Chung-fai. Experimentalist and improviser. Co-founder of Re Records, and founding member of experimental outfits such as No One Pulse, After Doom, adeō and Underture.

NOISE to SIGNAL 0.26 Electric Borderland

NOISE to SIGNAL 0.26 : Electric Borderland

A showcase of hybrid electronic music that goes beyond the standard technological format, featuring electronic experimentalist Tim Blechmann (Austria), analogue punker Soviet Pop (Beijing), and our very own drums and guitar duo The Language Lab.

Performers:
Tim Blechmann (AT)
Soviet Pop (CN)
The Language Lab (HK)

Date: Sep-30, 2014
Time: 8:30 PM
Venue: VIP Room, HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity
135 Junction Road, Kowloon, Hong Kong (Lok Fu MTR Exit B)
Admission: Pay What You Want

Jointly presented by Re-Records & Twenty Alpha
Venue Sponsor: HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity

About the Performers:

Tim Blechmann (AT)
http://tim.klingt.org/
Tim Blechmann is an improviser and composer, using computer and loudspeakers as main instrument. His music is focused on static noise textures that are digitally generated and spatially projected in real-time. For live performances his preferred lineup is the duo with other improvising musician. Regular collaborators include Klaus Filip, Manuel Knapp, Seijiro Murayama and Conny Zenk among others.

Soviet Pop (CN)
http://sovietpopbeijing.bandcamp.com/
A Sound-based Oscillator-Duo (Li Qing and Li Weisi), using analog synth and lo-fi equipments to make old sound in their first album The Dialogue. Now they`ve abandoned the keyboards, using only oscillators and patch cords, to play dirty oscillator punk songs. Sometimes they also play experimental compositions, pure noise or other nice shit.

The Language Lab (HK)
http://www.youtube.com/theLanguageLab
"The Language Lab" is a project led by visual designer Koo Park-kin and sound engineer Tse Kam-po. They believe that music is an inborn language and try to realize this by recording sonic experiments in varied environments. They would communicate in impromptu pieces with the unconventional use of musical instruments and audio equipment. They are convinced that a concert will come naturally in the process. Results from the current experiments show that this kind of music possesses features of such genres as movie soundtracks, avant-garde, dance, ethnic, rock and noise.

About organizers:
Re-Records
Re-Records is a record label initiated by experimental / electro-acoustic duo No One Pulse from Hong Kong. With Re, we don’t solely aim to be an outlet for releasing self-initiated or other affiliated projects, but also for artists and releases we deem interesting.

SUBLIMINAL LOUNGE #2: SURREALISME

SUBLIMINAL LOUNGE #2: SURREALISME
Music for Surrealist Movies

Live sound track performed by Swiss experimental trio DEER for silent surrealist films « La Perle » and « Monsieur Fantômas », with post-performance artist talk.

Live soundtrack:
DEER (CH)

Movie screening:
La Perle (Belgien 1929, 33 min), Henri d'Ursel
Monsieur Fantômas (Belgien 1937, 17 min), Ernst Moermann

Date: Sep-13, 2014
Time: 8:30 PM
Venue: VIP Room, HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity
Admission: Pay What You Want

Jointly presented by Re-Records &Twenty Alpha
Venue sponsor: HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity

About the movies:
La Perle was a surrealist film directed by Henri d'Ursel in 1929 under the pseudonym "Henri d'Arche". Henri d'Ursel was born in Brussels, Belgium. During the 1920s, he lived in Paris at the height of the surrealist and avant-garde movements. The film was based on a story by Georges Hugnet. In the film, a young man buys a pearl for his fiancée. He walks out of the jewelry store that opens onto a forest. He counts the pearls and realizes one is missing so he gets back to the store. On entering he catches sight of an alluring saleslady sitting on a showcase with her skirt lifted. On one of her stockings, close to the garter, another pearl necklace is tied. The young man takes it away from her. Outraged, the jeweler fires the assistant, who goes away with the man sitting on the handlebar of his bike. After this, the pearl is lost, found, lost again.

Monsieur Fantômas was a surrealist film made by Ernst Moerman in 1937. Shot on a shoestring budget on a beach and in an old cloister, the style of this scathing surrealist satire is immediately recognizable as that of the Feuillade serials. In top hat and tails, the Master of Crime (played by the future father of French singer Johnny Hallyday) tours the world in pursuit of the beautiful Elvire, punctuating his travels with mischief and acts to offend proper decency. The film encompasses amour fou, the meanders of dreams, fanatical anti-clericalism and a plea for subversion and adventure in "a world where nothing is impossible, where the miracle is the shortest route from our uncertainty to mystery

About the performer
DEER is a trio formed by bass clarinet players Hans Koch, Christian Müller and Silber Ingold, three prominent heads of the experimental music scene of Biel, Switzerland. Their playful interest in electroacoustic experiments is not only leading to filigree sound architecture, but also to heavy and dark soundscapes.

The trio DEER explores the miscellaneous sound colours of the bass clarinet and the different manners of playing it. Equipped with all kinds of electronic devices and effects, the three musicians take a close look at the sound and search for new depth in the interaction of the acoustic tone and the electronic way of examining it. In extension of the conceptual approach the trio also allows elements of improvisation in its play, thus connecting strictness with interacting freshness and stylistic playfulness.

About Subliminal Lounge
Subliminal Lounge is a series of movie screening and live performance event initiated by Re-Records & Twenty Alpha to interactively explore and recreate the connection between moving images and sound.

After studying at Golden Gate University in the 1990s, WANG returned to Taiwan and founded “noise”, the island’s first publication and label dedicated to the new music. In 2013 he had a solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Taipei, Hypertransmission. He has performed all over the world including at the Re-Opening of Queens Museum in New York and at Ars Electronica Center in Niels, Austria.

soundwatchtw.blogspot.tw/

Noise Steve
Influenced by the rave parties popular in Taiwan at the end of the 1990s, Chen and some friends began to organize a series of do-it-yourself, guerrilla-style raves in such locations as a hair salon and outside a roast duck shop. After viewing the noise art performance Static Riot by Wang Fujui, Chen decided to change course and pursue noise art. In 2002, Chen co-founded the Malt Fermentation Workshop in Taichung City, one of very few venues promoting experimental electronic music outside the capital city of Taipei. The group organized Taichung’s first noise art festival, Electroacoustic Counterattack.

e:ch
e:ch is the solo experimental project of Eric Chan, mostly known as the frontman of Alt Rock band Forget the G. e:ch is also a member of Macau noise band adeo and currently working as e:ch & the forgottens for a brand new album.

KWC
Born and brewed in Hong Kong, KWC spends time cutting loops and recording with his non-standard devices, he’s 1/2 of the electroacoustic improvisation duo No One Pulse and co-founder of the experimental imprint Re-Records. His work had been featured and performed in Hong Kong & Shenzhen Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture (2007/09), Architecture is Art Festival (2009) and Kill The Silence Festival (2013/14).

Nerve
Steve Hui (a.k.a. Nerve) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Hong Kong, whose practice mines the boundaries between contemporary music, sound art, multimedia theatre and underground subcultures. He is a member of the band A Rollor Control and club music collective Sessions.

www.lo4nerve.com/

////////////////////////////////////////
About the Performers:

Dave Phillips / dp (CH)
www.davephillips.ch
dp re/searches and ponders existences and behaviourisms humanimalistically via audio de/construction, psycho-acoustics and sonic rituals. Sound as communication in direct and primal form, a tool of metaphysics, a conscience, an unrestrained language. Sound as a means to activate primordial shared emotions otherwise hidden by civilized experience. dp's work engages, invites existentialist rumination, demands awareness, endorses sentient and environmental e/quality and encourages intervention and responibility; therapeutical aspects are acknowledged; a form of release is delivered, a liberating cleansing, a sound catharsis opposing the omnipresent reduction of existence and putting us in touch with our sentient origins as with the realities of our times - dp rings in the era of humanimal.

Sonically active for over 25 years, dp has appeared on 150+ releases and has played near to 400 concerts in 40 countries.

Mei Zhiyong (CN)

Harsh noise performer, founder of the tape release label Fuzztape, and member of the Chinese noise collective NOJIJI. As a noise artist, he is looking for insane expression of high volume harsh noise, and unusual ways of releasing sound from all kinds of device.

Olaf Hochherz (DE)
http://hochherz.klingt.org/
Olaf Hochherz is born 1981 in Wuppertal/Germany. He improvises with self build electronic instruments and is interested in unstable systems. His goal is not to control a technical aperture but to create an associative field. The sounds have their own live. His playing tries to keep them alive. He is interested in the effect acoustic activity has, the relation between surrounding environment and instruments, between abstract sounds and associations, between electrical and other worlds.
